Does Breast Augmentation Cause Cancer?

There have been some questions about whether or not having a breast enlargement or getting breast implants will result in a patient getting cancer.
Fortunately, it is not true that having breast augmentation will lead to breast cancer or any other type of cancer. It has been proven though that the
breast implants that are inserted during breast enlargements can hamper in the detection of breast
cancer and this is how the rumor started.

When the implant is inserted into the chest, especially if the implant is a subglandular placement between the chest muscle and the breast tissue, it
makes imaging during a mammography exam more difficult thus hindering the early detection of breast cancer in patients. The implant, especially if it
is a larger one, can hide breast tumors and make them unnoticeable during the early developmental stages when it is crucial that breast cancer is
removed and treated for successful recovery. This problem can possibly be avoided by finding a specially trained skilled technician to perform the
mammogram.

For patients who have had breast augmentations, getting a mammogram costs more and takes longer thus increasing the time that the patient is exposed to
radiation. It has been proven that radiation causes cancer but once again it is important to state that it is not the actual breast implant or breast
augmentation that causes cancer in the patient. It should be noted, that another issue with getting mammograms after having a breast augmentation is that mammograms are one of the highest rated risk of causing a rupture in a
breast implant. This is why it is very important that one researches and locates a highly trained technician in the field of mammography to avoid any
such trauma to the breast implant and to have the best in cancer detection screenings.
